World Widae Taekkyeon Organization
TaekkyeonTaekkyeon (Taekkyun/Taekkyon) is one of the most refined martial arts of Korea. The origin of Taekkyeon goes back to 2000 years ago. Taekkyeon is well known for its various kicking skills and its smooth and rhythmic, yet fast and powerful movement. Under the oppression by the Japanese Colonialism (1910-1945), Taekkyeon could barely maintained its existence only by the late Grandmaster Song Deok Ki (1893~1987) who was later recognized by the Korean government as the holder of Widae Taekkyeon, the 76th Important Intangible Cultural Property. Taekkyeon and Other Related Martial ArtsTaekkyeon is also known as a primitive form of Taekwondo. Taekwondo, a modern martial art created during 1950, tries to find its root from Taekkyeon. However, Taekkyeon barely exsited in mainstream then, and Taekwondo was rather created from the scratch. As a result, there is little similarity between Taekkyeon and Taekwondo in their forms of martial arts. In its form, Taekkyeon is rather similiar (yet different) to Tai Chi (Tai Chi Chuan). It is believed that when Zhang Sanfeng created Tai Chi in the 12th century he was influenced by Taekkyeon to introduce smoothness to Chinese martial arts.
